YRPA has received a generous surplus of 6,000 Wyoming Big Sage seedlings in 8" plugs, and we’re calling on volunteers to help get them planted at Dover Park! The planting will start on Friday, May 16th starting at 11:00 AM and working until the job is done. This is a great opportunity to support native habitat restoration and enjoy some time outdoors. Volunteers are asked to bring work gloves and a shovel—long-handled, narrow shovels like drain spades or trenching shovels work best. Whether you can stay for an hour or all afternoon, your help makes a difference!
Join fellow veterans for a free, hands-on filmmaking workshop hosted by the Patton Veterans Project at Montana State University - Billings from May 16–18, 2025. This three-day immersive experience invites veterans to tell their stories through film, taking full creative control from script to screen. No previous experience is needed—just bring your story, creativity, and a willingness to connect. All meals are provided, and the workshop is limited to 18 veterans on a first-come, first-served basis. Hosted at the Military and Veterans Success Center, this empowering event is a unique opportunity to foster connection, healing, and expression.
Founded in 2013, the Veteran Support Network (VSN) was created to provide a strong support system for Veterans, service members, and their families/caregivers. Each year on Armed Forces Day (the third Saturday in May), VSN honors our hometown heroes and pays tribute to the service and sacrifices of our military community by hosting “Heroes @ Home.” This annual event features free food, live music, a resource fair, and a silent auction, held in partnership with the Veteran Suicide Awareness & Prevention (VSAP) run, walk, and ruck.

Join the Montana VA Health Care System on Friday, May 23 for a special outdoor ceremony commemorating the renaming of the VA clinic in Butte, Montana, to the Charlie Dowd Veterans Affairs Clinic. This event honors the heroic legacy of Charlie Dowd, who was Montana’s last known living Pearl Harbor survivor, who served with distinction as a U.S. Navy radioman and was awarded two Bronze Star Medals for his bravery. A dedicated advocate for Veterans, Charlie spent his later years in Anaconda, MT, preserving the memory of WWII and supporting fellow service members. The ceremony will take place at 40 Three Bears Drive, Butte, MT—please dress for the weather.

Bridging Montana is all about coming together to build stronger, healthier communities. Bridging Montana: MT E-T Care & Connection Expo will take place on May 31 at the Billings Public Library in Billings, MT. This community resilience fair is designed to provide individuals and families with access to essential services, resources, and support. Hosted by Montana Employment and Training Services, RiverStone Health, Montana DPHHS, and the Billings Public Library, the event aims to foster connection and promote overall well-being. Attendees can receive free vaccines from RiverStone Health (with ID and proof of insurance), gather information to help stay healthy and ready for work or school, and engage with a wide range of service providers.

Veterans who are struggling with the invisible wounds of war are invited to a free, three-day retreat at Grouse Mountain Lodge in Whitefish, focused on healing from moral injury — an emotional and spiritual trauma that can result from experiences during service that conflict with deeply held values. Hosted by VOA Northern Rockies, the Moral Injury: Healing Wounded Souls Retreat offers a safe, supportive environment for veterans to explore and begin healing from feelings of shame, guilt, depression, anxiety, relationship struggles, substance use, and even thoughts of suicide.

The American Legion of Montana Boys State and the American Legion of Montana Auxiliary Girls State are immersive, weeklong programs designed for high school juniors to learn about government, leadership, and citizenship. Held annually at Carroll College in Helena, the 2025 sessions will take place from June 8–14. Participants will gain hands-on experience by forming mock governments, running for office, and passing legislation. This unique opportunity, valued at $300, is fully covered by local American Legion Posts and Auxiliary Units across the state, making it a cost-free experience for delegates.

The (Not So) Average Jane Retreat is a transformative five-day experience for female veterans, offering holistic healing through equine therapy, art, music, and other alternative therapies not typically supported by the VA. Set in a safe, women-centered environment, the retreat fosters connection and healing with others who understand the veteran journey. The next retreat will be held from June 17 – 22, 2025, in Bozeman, Montana, with applications closing on March 15, 2025. To apply, click here.

Representatives from Montana’s Congressional Delegation offices and all U.S. service academies—including the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Merchant Marines, and Air Force—will be present to provide information on the application process. The Native American Veterans Gathering is happening on April 25, in Great Falls. This special event honors the service and sacrifices of Native American veterans and creates a space for community, connection, and recognition. Veterans Navigation Network’s Warrior Bridge initiative will be represented by Eddie, who will be there to connect with attendees and share available resources for veterans transitioning to civilian life. Hosted by Solara Mental Health's Veterans Program, this gathering is open to all who want to show support and gratitude for those who served.
This event is designed for service members, veterans, their families, and surviving spouses to learn about eligibility for various benefits, including healthcare, disability compensation, and local and state resources. Additionally, attendees will gain insight into nonprofit support available in the Billings area.
