Blake’s Story:
After basic training and Airborne School, I finally earned my jump wings. Everyone was lined up to receive orders and head off to their next assignment. Many were going directly to their home units.

I had something else waiting for me.

Several men in tan berets began walking toward our formation. The pucker factor kicked in immediately because I knew exactly what came next: the Ranger Indoctrination Program, uncomfortably known as RIP.

The cadre started calling names from a roster. Each soldier whose name was called was being given an opportunity to join the prestigious 75th Ranger Regiment. You might expect congratulations, encouragement, or at least a handshake.

That was not what happened.

Instead, each candidate was greeted by the sharp, pointed, soul-crushing knife hand of death from a RIP cadre member. It was immediately followed by pushups, bear crawls, or some other exercise that appeared to have been invented on the spot.

I had seen a knife hand before—but never one delivered with that much authority.

“This is going to be tough. Shit just got real.”

That was my introduction to the proper use of the knife hand: creating an immediate and undeniable sense of urgency in whoever stood on the receiving end. It was not merely a hand gesture. It was a weapon of mass instruction.
