Montana accepted the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs/Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (VA/SAMHSA) Governor’s Challenge in 2019 — now known as Montana Warriors Forward — to combat veteran suicide. As one of 55 states and territories participating, Montana is part of a national effort to implement suicide prevention best practices for Service Members, Veterans, and their Families (SMVF) using a public health approach.
Montana Warriors Forward team consists of 13 organizations working together to implement suicide prevention strategies tailored to Montana’s communities.
Priorities:
Early Identification & Screening – Ensure SMVF members are identified and referred to the right support.
Enhanced Veteran Services – Strengthen MT211, Montana’s resource network, to connect veterans with vital services.
Lethal Means Safety – Promote safe firearm storage for veterans in crisis by encouraging voluntary transfers to trusted friends, family, or non-government organizations.
Challenge Objectives:
Develop an Implementation Plan – A state-led team of leaders creates a roadmap for suicide prevention.
Use Evidence-Based Practices – Implement research-backed strategies to reduce suicide rates.
Vommunity Engagement – Collaborate with city, county, tribal, and state governments, as well as non-profits and the broader community.
Increase Awareness – Educate communities on suicide prevention challenges and solutions.
